How to stand out?

Hi folks,

I'm currently being considered for what is basically the role of my dreams at a startup. It's very early stages: a kind, young recruiter is sending my profile to the hiring team. I should hear back next week.

I already know who I will be working for from the job description. And from snooping on LinkedIn. I'm wondering if I should send them an enthusiastic message directly, or if that will count against me somehow in the official process.

I can't stress enough how great of a fit I am for the role, and vice versa. I hear so many stories of people who went out of their way to be seen, and it worked out for them. I just never had it happen to me. I get a little lost in the politics.

So, what is your opinion on the matter? Have you ever done anything different to stand out and show interest? Did it work?

Hey, great topic.

Re: finding the person on LinkedIn, is it because this person was named in the job description, or you found them? I ask because if they're named in the description, then I don't see a problem, but if you "found" them then I'd still do it, but keep it brief: Don't ask for a coffee, don't ask to "pick their brain", don't try and bypass the hiring process. Just send them a note saying who you are, you're happy to be applying, and looking forward to hopefully meeting with them.

"Hey X, I'm Luise - I'm applying for the X job. I just wanted to send you a quick note to say I'm excited to apply for the role. I was previously at X and did X, so it seemed like a great fit. Hope to meet with you soon!"

That's it. I think the biggest thing is, don't give this person more work to do by reaching out, setting a time, etc. Just a quick note like that can at least make you recognizable.

I love that! It's someone I found, but it wasn't deep sleuthing or anything. I think a simple intro is a great idea just to be reminded as someone motivated. 🙂 thanks for the reply!
